# 21.6 Using External Events in Workflows

1. Create a workflow in **Automation Workflows**.
2. Set the **Trigger Type** to `External Integration Event Received`.
3. Configure event type filters as needed.
4. You don't need a separate contact step: Peikly creates or links the contact from the event's customer data before the first action step. Events without a customer name, email or WhatsApp number fail at that step. With a specific store-event trigger (for example **Order Completed**) instead, add **Add/Upsert Contact** first.
5. Add further steps (send email, send WhatsApp, add tag, etc.).
6. Activate the workflow.

**Available placeholder variables in workflow steps triggered by external events:**

| Placeholder | Description |
| --- | --- |
| `{{Trigger.customer.email}}` | Customer email from the event payload |
| `{{Trigger.customer.name}}` | Customer name |
| `{{Trigger.order.id}}` | Order ID |
| `{{Trigger.order.total}}` | Order total |
| `{{Trigger.event.type}}` | Event type string |
| `{{Meta.customer.email}}` | Alias for `Trigger.customer.email` |
