# 6.4 Remove a User from the Team

Use this when someone leaves. They are signed out straight away, and everything they owned is handed to a teammate you choose, so nothing is lost.

1. In the **All Users** list, click the **Edit** icon on the user row.
2. In **Account Controls**, click **Remove from team**.
3. Review what the person has: contacts they own, email conversations, mailboxes, unfinished post drafts, open tasks and automations that assign new contacts to them.
4. Under **Hand over**, pick the teammate who receives these items. It defaults to you, and only active members of your company are listed.
5. If the person has reply-to mailboxes, choose what happens to them:
   - **Give the mailboxes to the teammate.** The teammate can then read everything in them, including past emails.
   - **Unassign and stop syncing.** Nobody sees the mail, and no new mail is collected.
6. If the person has unfinished drafts, choose **Transfer ownership to the teammate** or **Keep them and share with the whole team**.
7. Optionally add a reason, and tick the box to email the person a short notice that their access was removed.
8. Click **Remove from team** and confirm.

What happens:

- The person is signed out on their next click, and any page they have open stops working. They can no longer sign in.
- Posts they scheduled stay scheduled and publish on time, still showing them as the author.
- Their Canva account link is disconnected.
- Automations that assign new contacts to them are re-pointed to the teammate, so new contacts are not assigned to someone who is gone.
- Your other company administrators and the teammate are notified, and one entry is added to the user's audit trail describing what was handed over.
- API tokens they created belong to your company and keep working. The screen lists them so you can revoke any you no longer want.
- Reactivating the person later restores their access only. It does not take the handed-over items back.

**If the person connected a social platform** (Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Pinterest or LinkedIn), the screen tells you which one. Peikly keeps working, but that connection uses their login, so reconnect it under your own account from **Connections**. The **Connections** page shows who connected each platform. If they connected nothing, the screen confirms there are no passwords to change, because they never had any.

**Safeguards:**

- You cannot remove yourself.
- The last active company administrator cannot be removed, or have the administrator role taken away. Make someone else an administrator first.
- The company owner cannot be removed or demoted. Transfer ownership to another administrator first ([6.7](/docs/the-company-owner/)).

**Note:** Users are never deleted. Their history and activity logs are retained.

Changing someone's role, or setting a new password for them, also signs them out on their next click so the change takes effect immediately; they sign in again to continue.
