# 5.9 Batch Contact Operations

## What This Feature Does

Applies one change to many contacts at once from the contact list, instead of editing each contact individually.

## When to Use

- Use to tag, retag, or re-status a large group of contacts after an import or campaign.
- Use **Reset WhatsApp Status** to recover contacts that were incorrectly marked Unsubscribed/Undeliverable/Invalid by a past delivery failure that wasn't a real opt-out.
- Do not use batch **Delete** unless you're certain — it soft-deletes every targeted contact.

## Prerequisites

- CompanyAdmin role, or TenantUser with contact edit permission and access to the targeted contacts.

## Step-by-Step Instructions

1. On the **Contacts** list, select one or more contacts with the row checkboxes (or apply filters first if you intend to target all matching contacts).
2. Click **Batch Actions** and choose an operation:
   - **Add Tag** / **Remove Tag**
   - **Change Status**
   - **Change Language**
   - **Change Person Type**
   - **Reset WhatsApp Status**
   - **Delete**
3. In the modal, confirm the target: **selected contacts** (the ones you checked) or **all contacts matching the current filters** — if you choose "all filtered," a confirmation popup shows exactly how many contacts will be affected before you proceed.
4. Fill in any operation-specific value (tag name, new status, language, person type) and confirm.

## Reset WhatsApp Status (Detail)

- Contacts currently marked **Unsubscribed**, **Undeliverable**, or **Invalid** on WhatsApp are reset to **Unknown**, re-enabling messaging to them. Contacts with any other status are left untouched.
- Use this specifically to recover contacts that were flagged by a delivery error rather than a genuine opt-out.
- If a contact genuinely opted out, WhatsApp reports it again on the next send attempt (Meta error 131050) and the contact is automatically re-marked Unsubscribed — resetting status does not defeat a real opt-out.

## What Happens After

- The operation applies immediately to every targeted contact.
- **Delete** soft-deletes the targeted contacts (see [5.4 Delete a Contact](/docs/delete-a-contact/)).

## Best Practices

- Filter first, then use "all matching" for large batches instead of selecting rows one by one.
- Use **Reset WhatsApp Status** sparingly and only when you're confident the prior failure wasn't a real opt-out — repeatedly messaging genuinely unsubscribed contacts risks your WhatsApp number's quality rating (see the Health Indicators in [9.1 WhatsApp Phone Numbers](/docs/peikly-whatsapp-setup/)).
